 Waste analysis and monitoring

It is widely recognised that ‘if you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it’ and, as sustainable waste management becomes an ever more important issue, accurate waste analysis and monitoring is invaluable.

Waste analysis (waste audits) – We undertake waste audits throughout the UK covering the full spectrum of recyclables and residual waste arisings: including household waste from kerbside, HWRC , bring sites, and commercial waste streams.

Participation monitoring – We can measure the uptake of collection systems. This method is often undertaken alongside a waste audit or contamination monitoring.

Contamination monitoring – We carry out contamination monitoring to assess the propensity of users of a collection system to put out only the targeted materials for collection. The results can be used to guide the effective design of promotional material provided to local residents.

Why it is important to know the composition of your waste?

A well designed and conducted waste analysis study can improve understanding of the waste stream and how it is changing over time, and will provide answers to the following key questions:

  • how much targeted recyclate remains in the residual waste stream
  • whether different socio-economic sections are presenting the same waste composition and using the waste services in the same way
  • what social or demographic factors are affecting waste composition
  • what reusable and/or potentially recyclable material is not being diverted to civic amenity sites
  • what is the biological content of the residual waste stream
  • assessments of how successful pilot studies testing alternatives/alterations to current collection regimes have been
  • evaluating performance of communication campaigns
  • identify specific materials for targeted communication campaigns
