Dr Julian Parfitt - presenting on urban sustainability in Riyadh and Jeddah

Dr Julian Parfitt - out and about in December 2010 presenting in Riyadh and Jeddah as part of a team of experts from UK and US presenting on issues of urban sustainability.

The UK team included Defra’s Chief Science Adviser, Professor Robert Watson and Professor Paul Murain, author of numerous books on ‘new urbanism’.The programme is being funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Strategic Program Fund and the first day of the seminar in Riyadh was attended by Sir Tom Phillips, the British ambassador to the Kingdom. The programme will culminate in a final set of workshops in February in which an action plan will be developed as  part of the Saudi Sustainability Initiative, which is led by Prince Faisal bin Turki Al-Faisal. 

The workshops were designed to review the latest policies and strategies in dealing with sustainable development, including renewable energy, waste management, water and agriculture, food security, cities and sustainable urbanism. The workshop in Jeddah led the formation of a new Sustainability Alliance, which will involve all those working on issues with energy, water, urban planning and waste in the city.

Defra has published a study carried out by Resource Futures which provides the best estimates to date of what’s in the ‘national rubbish bin’.

Research into reuse of household items through online portals

In 2011, Resource Futures carried out WRAP funded research into how household items are reused through online portals such as eBay, Freegle and Gumtree.  The research included a detailed survey on internet user habits regarding online exchange and sought to understand the reasons for not using such sites.

Community RePaint: A Helping Hand for Hearts and Minds in 2011

In 2011, householders, traders and paint manufacturers donated 343,957 litres of paint to Community RePaint schemes, which then distributed 217,112 litres to community groups and individuals saving 565 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of taking 192 cars off our roads - and providing 766 volunteer and training opportunities. The network now has over 65 schemes across the UK with four new schemes about to start at the beginning of 2012.
