Monitoring and evaluation

Working out where you are - and where you should be going

The starting point for all our clients is for us to look at their current situation and assess what needs to change to achieve their aims. This is an ongoing process - once changes have been made, we’ll again monitor and evaluate to see how well they’ve worked and what the next steps should be.

By doing this we can:

• Design better services - by identifying what is working and what isn’t

• Target communication campaigns - by DEFRA environmental segmentations,
   geographical or demographic data

• Monitor how well different interventions have worked and why

• Carry out statistical projections – to predict future amounts and types of waste
so you know what will be needed in terms of collections and disposal/reprocessing
   infrastructure

Be better informed

We carry out monitoring and evaluation in a number of ways. These include primary data gathering either through attitudinal and behaviour surveys (face to face, post, web based or phone); by simply observing what people are doing, including participation monitoring for kerbside collections; and by analysing waste streams.

Our specialist research design services provide you with even more options, including a range of secondary and primary data gathering, as well as action-based research.

Innovation and expertise

When combined with our research services we are able to develop innovative approaches to evaluating new services with work to date ranging from the development of monitoring quality inputs and outputs at MRFs to evaluating the effectiveness of social marketing campaigns on water efficiency in the home.

You can rest assured that any innovative approach will be rigourous and valid and our expertise is exemplified by our recent work revising and updating WRAP's monitoring and evaluation toolkit.

Project Synopses

Understanding Waste Growth at Local Authority Level

Research was undertaken for Defra to provide a more informed understanding of the factors that influence growth in household waste through the investigation of the findings from a set of detailed case studies.

Food Waste? We’re At Your Disposal…

Resource Futures is supporting Lancashire County Council with an assessment of their food waste collection service trial.
