Comprehensive guidance published to assist local authorities improve the performance of HWRCs

Resource Futures has produced comprehensive guidance to help local authorities, waste management companies and third sector organisations to improve the performance of Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). Commissioned and published by WRAP, the guidance provides advice about cost-effective methods to improve HWRC management and a number of case studies from across the country.

Report reveals 1.5 million tonnes of bulky waste are disposed of each year in the UK

Resource Futures has carried out the biggest fieldwork project to investigate arisings of bulky household waste in the UK. The project, commissioned by WRAP, estimates that over 1.5 million tonnes of bulky waste items are disposed of in the UK annually.  Most of these items are taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) and over half of these are estimated to be re-usable.

Resource Futures helps HWRCs to support hospice in South Bucks

Resource Futures has worked with Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC), as part of a project funded by WRAP, to develop innovative reuse facilities at two of the county’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). Good quality items donated at Buckinghamshire’s 10 recycling centres will go on sale at new onsite shops based at the Aston Clinton and High Heavens, High Wycombe, HWRCs. The money raised will support local charity South Bucks Hospice. 

Community RePaint wins not one but two awards

Community RePaint, the UK-wide paint reuse network, has been recognised recently with, not one, but two awards! On Thursday 8 November 2012 Community RePaint Network Co-ordinator Clair Lloyd received the Roger Perry Award for Best Research Paper by the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM). The award is made annually, and recognises the research being carried out by members of the Institution at Masters and PhD level.

Student waste reduction scheme raises cash for charity

A scheme to encourage students to donate items for reuse to a children’s cancer charity has been hailed a success; diverting 1.2 tonnes of waste from landfill and raising £5,000 for CLIC Sargent. The initiative involving the University of Bristol, the University of the West of England, Bristol City Council, waste management company May Gurney and Resource Futures also resulted in a 50 per cent reduction in residents’ complaints about student waste.

New Waste & Energy Education Programme for Devon Schools

Resource Futures has just started delivering new Waste and Energy Education Programmes to Devon Schools. Funded by Devon County Council (DCC), Resource Futures is working in partnership with DCC, the Waste Education Steering Group and Devon Community Composting Network to deliver a range of exciting and educational activities to young people aged four to 18 years. This will build on the successful range of curriculum-linked activities and operational support already delivered in Devon.

Lifetime achievement honour for CEO Jane Stephenson

Resource Futures’ Chief Executive Officer, Jane Stephenson MBE, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at MRW’s National Recycling Awards this week. She was presented with the award at a glittering ceremony held at the Lancaster London Hotel on 3rd July.

Community RePaint: Going for Gold... and Green

 The UK’s award winning paint reuse network is getting into the spirit of London 2012 by encouraging Great Britons to donate leftover, reusable paint to Community RePaint - instead of wasting it.

Last year 332 million litres of paint (retail and trade) were sold in the UK. Of this, it is estimated that around 50 million litres – or enough to fill 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools - remained unused; stored in homes or garages, or just thrown away.

Community RePaint network keeps on expanding

Community RePaint network continues to expand with four new schemes in as many months. At the start of 2012 Community RePaint East Berkshire joined the already 63-scheme strong network. This scheme is run by The Green Machine, collecting paint under contract from two HWRCs in Bracknell and Reading; within a matter of weeks they were filling their shelves with reusable paint, including 300 tins donated by a private company clearing out old offices.

Resource Futures helps WRAP understand recent reductions in food waste

Resource Futures has recently helped WRAP to estimate how much household food waste has decreased nationally in recent years, with the recently published “Synthesis of Food Waste Compositional Data 2010” To see the report, click here.  

Community RePaint: A Helping Hand for Hearts and Minds in 2011

In 2011, householders, traders and paint manufacturers donated 343,957 litres of paint to Community RePaint schemes, which then distributed 217,112 litres to community groups and individuals saving 565 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of taking 192 cars off our roads - and providing 766 volunteer and training opportunities. The network now has over 65 schemes across the UK with four new schemes starting at the beginning of 2012.    

Repainting the Nation! - Paint reuse network touches thousands of lives in 2010

Community RePaint, the national network of paint reuse schemes, managed by Resource Futures, helped to make Britain a brighter place last year by supporting over 12,000 groups and people to transform their local environment.

Foresight Programme’s ‘Future of Food and Farming’ project publishes key report with WRAP and Resource Futures' help

Resource Futures worked jointly with WRAP on the production of a report on global food waste and the prospects for food production in the future. 

This important publication, for the Foresight Programme’s ‘Future of Food and Farming’ project, was launched in January 2011 at an event at HM Treasury.

Dulux confirms commitment as sponsor of Community RePaint

Community RePaint - the national network of paint reuse schemes, managed by Resource Futures - is delighted to confirm that Dulux has agreed to extend its existing commitment to the programme and become the key sponsor over the next three years, until the end of 2013.

Reducing energy use in Bristol schools

Resource Futures worked in partnership with Bristol City Council, Green Path Solutions and Sustainable Redland to help Bristol Primary schools reduce their energy usage.  The key messages were why saving energy is so important to help the environment and save money and how everyone can do their bit to help. 

Bulky Waste Guidance

Resource Futures was contracted by WRAP to develop Bulky Waste Guidance for Local Authorities in association with Caroline Lee-Smith. The guidance updated the original toolkit “Bulky Waste Collections; Maximising Reuse and Recycling - A Step by Step Guide” which provides ideas and identifies opportunities to increase the amount of household bulky waste that is reused and recycled. 

Devon Composting in Schools project

The Devon Composting in Schools project, delivered by Resource Futures, was possibly the biggest schools' food waste composting programme in the country, involving over 80 Devon primary and secondary schools.
