Pupil Waste Summit, Devon
On March 17th 2011 Resource Futures were pleased to work in partnership with Devon County Council to organise a successful ‘Waste Summit’ for Year 10 pupils from Devon secondary schools.
5 schools from all over Devon participated, and the day got off to a great start with an inspirational talk from Mark Shayler, an expert in eco design and packaging.
Year 10 students and their teachers were invited to participate in waste-related workshops and activities, listen to speakers and create a school action plan. This work linked into the National Curriculum for Geography, Science, English, Citizenship and PSHE. There was also a 'waste free lunch' competition where students competed to create the least rubbish from their packed lunches.
RF Education officers ran workshops which encouraged the students to think through issues related to waste and recycling – on a local level but also the global impacts. The most popular activity was the ‘Trading Game’ where students were split into groups representing different countries, and were given a set or resources to reflect the wealth of that country. There were then given a task to do with the resources they had, and were outraged at the unfairness of it. RF Education Officers then helped the students to draw links with what they experienced, how they felt and the decisions they made, relating this to global issues around resources and waste.
Pupils participating in the event were encouraged to feedback what they have learned to the rest of the school. Resource Futures' Waste Education Officers offered to visit the school to support follow up work with further activities and assemblies.
