- [Assessing the effectiveness of the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging (SSPP) Challenge](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/assessing-the-effectiveness-of-the-smart-sustainable-plastic-packaging-sspp-challenge/): Needing to find a solution to this increasingly critical issue, in 2018 WRAP announced the  UK 2025 Plastics Pact. Furthermore, in support of the UK's drive for clean growth and industrial decarbonisation, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) established the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging (SSPP) Challenge, which would also support business R&D towards achieving Plastic Pact targets.  This £60 million programme launched in 2019 – delivered over six years and completed in March 2025 – represents the largest and most ambitious UK government investment in sustainable plastic packaging research and innovation to date.
- [Increasing recycling rates in Blackburn with Darwen through targeted communications](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/increasing-recycling-rates-in-blackburn-with-darwen-through-targeted-communications/): Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council recorded a recycling rate of just 30% in 2023/24, significantly lower than the national average of 44.6%. Keen to improve its performance across kerbside collections and Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), Blackburn with Darwen recognised that a more effective communications strategy was needed.

- [ESG strategy development for Genuine Solutions](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/esg-strategy-development-for-genuine-solutions/): Electronic waste (also known as e-waste) is a hugely problematic waste stream in the UK, with over 1.6 million tonnes being generated each year. In this context, Genuine Solutions and Relove Technology’s work is crucial: they’ve recovered and distributed over 88 million mobile devices and accessories to date, ensuring 9,000 tonnes of unwanted electrical waste hasn’t ended up in landfill.
- [Improving recycling engagement in Plymouth](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/improving-recycling-engagement-in-plymouth/): Plymouth City Council was keen to tackle contamination of household recycling, although it knew that any alterations to its waste and recycling services would need to be future-proofed with upcoming mandatory requirements in mind, to avoid any changes quickly becoming superseded by the new regulations.

This is exacerbated by factors such as weather conditions and reliance on ferries as a primary mode of transportation for materials.

The body plays a crucial role in the UK’s post-Brexit environmental governance, including dealing with regulatory complexities in Northern Ireland.

As part of this commitment, the IChemE has established a Sustainability Hub and work to provide sustainable process engineering training courses developed by experts for chemical engineers.

- [Investigating barriers to adoption of circular economy practices in Scotland](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/barriers-to-adoption-of-circular-economy-practices-in-scotland/): Transitioning to a circular economy has wide environmental, economic and social benefits, yet more needs to be done to ensure businesses of all sizes across Scotland can engage with circular economy practices.
- [Delivering nationwide composition analysis to drive waste reduction in Wales](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/delivering-nationwide-composition-analysis-to-drive-waste-reduction-in-wales/): This research is the largest and most comprehensive national waste composition analysis undertaken in the UK to date. The analysis covered 11 waste streams over two seasons (summer and winter 2022) and across all 22 local authorities in Wales. Over 2,000 person-days of fieldwork were completed by Resource Futures’ experienced in-house sorting teams with a total of 177 tonnes of waste being sorted into 73 categories.
- [An action roadmap for aerosol recycling](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/an-action-roadmap-for-aerosol-recycling/): It is expected that mandatory recycling targets of 50 percent for aluminium and 85 percent for steel packaging by 2030 will form part of new packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) reforms. Both aluminium and steel aerosols will have an important role in helping achieve these targets; however, aerosol recycling is not currently optimised.
- [Promoting Household Recycling To Reduce Waste](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/providing-waste-and-recycling-advice-across-devon/): Resource Futures manages this long-term project for Devon County Council which positively impacts recycling levels across the region through the provision of a team of three full-time Waste and Recycling Advisors. Since 2017 our team has engaged with residents across the nine authorities in Devon in areas determined by the local authority partners, working closely with them on key messages and target areas.
- [Reducing Single-Use Nappy Waste](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/gloucestershire-real-nappy-project/): In order to reduce the quantity of disposable nappies going to incineration, Resource Futures manages a real nappy project and incentive scheme for Gloucestershire County Council. Built on the success of previous real nappy projects elsewhere, we have overseen this project since 2008.
- [Informing the feasibility of a large-scale reuse park in North Wales](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/feasibility-study-large-scale-reuse-park/): Managing five household recycling centres (HRCs) in North Wales, Bryson Recycling has seen the social value to local communities of establishing a partnership with a local social enterprise to run reuse shops at some of their sites.

In 2021, WRAP Cymru undertook a 12-week trial targeting post-consumer plastic films to understand the viability, costs, and impact of offering households a kerbside film collection.

- [The carbon impact case for increasing reuse and remanufacturing of leftover paint](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/the-carbon-impact-case-for-increasing-reuse-and-remanufacturing-of-leftover-paint/): When the British Coatings Federation (BCF) developed the Resource Efficiency Action Plan for decorative paint in 2015, it was estimated only 2% of leftover paint in the UK was recycled or remanufactured. The 98% that is landfilled or incinerated is seen as a major environmental issue for the industry that must be tackled.

- [Meaningful Climate Conversations in East Devon](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/meaningful-climate-conversations-in-east-devon/): East Devon’s mobile Creative Cabin was rebranded as Climate Conversations in summer 2021 and went on tour across the area, being officially launched on Ocean Day, 8 June 2021. The project hosted creative activities for adults and children which promoted environmental awareness. Resource Futures role was to devise 2 sets of handouts to provide visitors to the cabin with information on climate change, what they could do about it and suggestions of the conversations it would be useful to have.
- [Researching Reuse Opportunities: Somerset](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/researching-reuse-opportunities-for-somerset-waste-partnership/): Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) commissioned our team to research existing community reuse activity in the Somerset region with a view to increasing levels of reuse by residents across the County.
- [Digital Deposit Return Scheme: High-Level Economic Impact Assessment](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/digital-deposit-return-scheme-high-level-economic-impact-assessment/): On behalf of the Digital DRS Industry Working Group, we co-developed a solution for digital DRS, working with experts from beverage, waste and IT sectors. The digital alternative to an RVM-based DRS would see the return of drinks containers via existing kerbside collections, with the deposit claimed by scanning a unique code on the drink container with a smartphone app.
- [UK Policy Development: Tackling Marine Litter](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/fishing-and-aquaculture-gear-uk-policy-development/): Working with departments from all four UK governments over a series of projects, Resource Futures was able to build data and insight where previously there was limited and fragmented knowledge. Using the insight gathered on the movement of materials and waste, policy options were co-developed and then compared using economic assessment.
- [Fishing & Aquaculture Gear: Scottish Industries](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/fishing-and-aquaculture-gear-focus-on-scottish-industries/): Resource Futures undertook several studies for the Scottish Government to understand fishing and aquaculture gear use and waste management in greater detail, focusing on the large industries of aquaculture and creel pot fishers. This work provides a significant new evidence base, and insight on potential solutions to tackle marine litter and manage difficult products at end-of-life.
- [Impact Assessment: Single-Use Plastics Ban In Wales](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/assessing-the-impacts-of-a-single-use-plastics-ban-in-wales/): Resource Futures conducted preliminary research to help the Welsh Government understand the impact in Wales of a ban or restriction in sale of items in the EU’s single-use plastics directive.
- [Data Support: Sustainable Clothing Action Plan](https://www.resourcefutures.co.uk/project/data-support-for-sustainable-clothing-action-programme-signatories/): SCAP (Sustainable Clothing Action Plan) is a voluntary commitment made by stakeholders in the textile industry – including brands and retailers representing more than 48 per cent of UK clothing sales volume – to collectively reduce the environmental impacts of the garments they produce.
