Assessing the impact of a ban on plastic plates, cutlery and balloon sticks

5 February 2019

A report for Defra to assess the economic, environmental and social impacts of a potential ban on plastic balloon sticks, plastic plates and plastic cutlery.

“This research shows the benefits and some of the complexity associated with implementing a ban as an instrument to mitigate plastic pollution,” said Bernie Thomas, principal consultant at Resource Futures. “The report indicates the economic, social and environmental implications of implementing a ban, while considering unintended consequences of substitute material choices and considers changes in product design and consumer behaviours.”
