Fixy earns second consecutive award nod for innovation in reuse

29 April 2025

Resource Futures, Somerset Council, and SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK have once again been shortlisted for an Award for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management thanks to the continued success of The Fixy Project, a mobile initiative tackling e-waste through reuse, repair, and redistribution.

Nominated for the second year running in the ‘Reuse Initiative of the Year’ category, Fixy is being recognised for its creative, community-driven approach to raising awareness of, and driving activities around, the reuse, repair and redistribution of electrical items.

The nomination recognises the impact Fixy has had since its inception in 2022: saving over 5,400 electrical items from the bin, providing refurbished and redistributed devices to those in digital poverty in partnership with DonateIT. The project has also helped to promote the kerbside collection of small electricals for recycling in Somerset.

The team also piloted an innovative recycling scheme for residents in 11 blocks of flats in Somerset – a group which don’t always have access to the same recycling services as other households. The Fixy team, alongside SUEZ, hosted targeted outreach and tech amnesties alongside the addition of dedicated pink bins for small electricals and a collection for larger electrical items.

The pilot saw 386kg of electricals collected for recycling; around a quarter of the items collected were able to be refurbished and donated for reuse by the scheme’s tech partner DonateIT.

“This nomination highlights Fixy’s growing impact and its status as a model for forward-thinking reuse strategies in the fight against WEEE waste,” comments Charlie Eddisford, Communities Lead at Resource Futures. “It is great to see continued industry recognition for the powerful role this project can play in finding effective solutions to our national e-waste problem at a regional level.”

Cllr Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council Lead Member for Transport and Waste added: “We’re pleased to support such an innovative project. The Fixy Team have done a great job in raising the profile of electrical repair and reuse in Somerset. We’re pleased that the project has received national recognition.”

Matthew Canning, Contract Director at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said: “It is great news that the Fixy project has again been shortlisted for an award to recognise its achievements in Somerset.  We are proud to support, in partnership with Somerset Council, a project that encourages reuse and repair within communities and helps us progress to a more circular economy.”
