Podcast: What will it really take to fund a circular economy in the UK?

15 May 2025

If resource depletion and environmental pollution are market failures, then financial and fiscal policy incentives offer a toolkit with which governments can attempt to repair these and build a more circular economy.

These tools can be focused on long-term, wide-ranging impact – e.g. a strong tax increase on the use of virgin resources – or they can be quick fixes such as a time-limited subsidy for bicycle repair services.

Following the publication of our research on ‘Shaping future financial and fiscal policies for a more circular UK economy’ for CIWM, our Policy Lead Susan Evans sat down with CIWM’s Lee Marshall and WWF’s Paula Chin for an episode of the Beyond Waste podcast to discuss these issues further and explore how we can make better use of policy tools to bring about the circular economy.
