Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in Devon Schools

Resource Futures delivers two waste education projects in Devon schools. Both are funded by Devon County Council and are FREE to schools.
The Devon Waste Education programme is available to all schools, and offers a wide range of audits, workshops and assemblies for all ages, focusing on reducing waste at home and at school.
The Composting in Schools project works with learning communities, each of which is made up of a secondary school and its feeder primary schools in the local area. Schools are provided with equipment and support to enable them to compost their food waste on the school site.

Devon Waste Education Programme
Resource Futures' Waste Education programme is very flexible and can be customised to meet the needs of all schools. Our curriculum-linked workshops, interactive assemblies and ongoing support will enable your staff and pupils to:
-
Investigate how much waste your school is generating, and which materials you are throwing away
-
Take action in school to reduce waste
-
Learn about the environmental impacts of waste and the importance of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle)

NEW for 2012 - Recycling Waste Electrical Products
Resource Futures is working with WeeeCare and Devon County Council to encourage pupils and their families to reuse and recycle waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE).
We have developed three exciting new workshops to help KS1, KS2 and KS3 pupils understand the environmental impacts of the use and disposal of everyday electrical and electronic items.
- KS1 will use their mathematical skills to explore how many electrical appliances families use on a daily basis, before considering how frequently we buy new appliances and what happens to the old ones when we throw them away.
- KS2 pupils will learn more about the science of batteries, found in many of our small electronic gadgets, and consider their environmental impact.
- KS3 students will investigate the global impacts on people and wildlife of manufacture of mobile phones.
As with all Resource Futures' workshops, pupils will learn about the facilities for reusing and recycling in their local area, have lots of fun, and be inspired to spread the message to their friends and families.
These workshops, and a new WEEE themed assembly, are available from January 2012 as part of our Waste Education project. For more information please see our primary and secondary brochures. Book now to avoid disappointment!
Devon Composting in Schools Project
This excting project has been running in learning communities
made up of clusters of primary and secondary schools across Devon since September 2009. Schools are provided with free composting equipment and ongoing support in the form of assemblies, workshops and staff training, all delivered by qualified and experienced teachers. As well as diverting large amounts of food waste from landfill, this project encourages schools to use the composting process as an educational resource, and helps them to save money on waste disposal.

Recycling Education for Torbay Schools
Resource Futures' Education team is working closely with Torbay Council to support its recent changes to recycling and waste services. In Spring 2012 we will be running assemblies for all Torbay primary schools; many schools will also be offered workshops.
The sessions, which are funded by Torbay Council and free to schools, will provide a lively introduction to why we should recycle, how to recycle in Torbay and what different objects can be recycled into. The children will learn a catchy recycling song and be given stickers to signify their 'expert' status. They will be fully equipped to pass on their learning to their families and help adults at home and school to recycle.
Our Education Officer will be contacting all Torbay schools in November / December 2011 to make bookings for the spring term of 2012.
