Community Action Groups (CAG) Somerset

A new way to empower sustainable action in communities across Somerset

Our newest Community Action Groups (CAG) network, CAG Somerset was launched in November 2023 with a mission to build and provide support to a thriving network of community groups across the county.

As well as focusing on helping groups deliver positive outcomes on reuse, repair, waste reduction, sharing, surplus food and composting, CAG Somerset provides a range of practical support and advice to members, including:

  • Training and resources, skills sharing and mentoring
  • Basic governance support
  • Operational support (such as risk assessments)
  • Access to grant funding
  • Insurance support, discounts and grants
  • Fundraising assistance
  • Support with measuring positive impact and outcomes

CAG Somerset members include:

  • community cooking groups
  • community fridges and pantries
  • repair cafes and repair groups
  • share and swap shops
  • tree planting
  • and more…

In its first five months, this network:

  • Signed up 20 members to the network, and aided the creation of two groups from scratch;
  • Supported 398 events and activities across Somerset;
  • Repaired 523 items and shared 871 items;
  • Prevented 22 tonnes of waste and avoided 48 tonnes of CO2e emissions;
  • Saved consumers a total of £40,475.

The CAG Somerset programme is funded by Somerset Council and SUEZ UK, and is managed by Resource Futures staff.
